		<title>Toxic-Air-and-Soil-in-Automobile-Workshop-Impact-Negatively-on-the-Health-Status-of-Automechanics-The-Nigeria-Environment</title>

		<description>{<![CDATA[Objective: Auto-mechanics are constantly in contact with both air and soil harmful chemicals and toxic substances in their environment. A comparative cross-sectional study of analysis of hazardous stationary emissions of air and soil petroleum pollutants in automobile workshops has been analyzed. Furthermore, the impact of prolonged or continual occupational and environmental exposure on health of auto-mechanics from two distinct and contrasting automobile workshop environments was studied. Methods: Data were collected by a questionnaire interview designed about occupational activities, lung functions and blood samples of the subjects, soil samples and air qualities from automobile workshops and control sites were collected for analysis. Samples were collected from June to September 2016, during the rainy season. Results: Auto-mechanics are at higher risk for respiratory, hepatic, reproductive, haematological, immune, platelet and selenium dysfunctions, as a result of direct exposure to both volatile organic compound (0.212 ppm) and total petroleum hydrocarbon (62.370 mg/kg) toxicities, respectively. There were substantial regional variations in the burden of the petroleum toxicant estimates, with Ihiala bearing most of the burdens compared with Port Harcourt and Obrikom. The present data revealed increase in concentration of some liver enzymes, total bilirubin, total protein, mean platelet volume, but decrease in selenium, red blood count, white cell count, haemoglobin, haematocrit, testosterone, force expiratory volume in auto-mechanics in comparison with control (p &#8804; 0.05).]]>}</description>

		<description>{<![CDATA[Considerable controversy exists on the effect of NSAIDs on the oxidative status. Despite being held pro-oxidant in few instances, there are many studies which have commented on the antioxidant effect of NSAIDs and its relevance and beneficial utilization in clinical set-up. The present study probed into the antioxidant potential of some common marketed NSAIDs in in-vitro set up using DPPH and Nitric oxide radical scavenging assay. Nitric oxide radical scavenging procedure showed maximum scavenging activity for paracetamol and mefenamic acid, followed by aspirin. Results from DPPH assay showed maximum scavenging activity from aspirin followed by ibuprofen. Other NSAIDs also showed considerable radical scavenging activity indicative of antioxidant potential.]]>}</description>

		<description>{<![CDATA[Background: Acute Gastroenteritis is a common cause of hospitalization in India ranging from mild annoyances to devastating, dehydrating illnesses that can kill within hours. Drug utilization evaluation can be used for the description of drug use pattern; early signals of irrational use of drugs; interventions to improve drug use; quality control cycle; continuous quality improvement. Objectives: 1. Better understanding the burden and incidence of acute gastroenteritis in adults. 2. Assessment of Clinical Profile and Risk factors for Gastroenteritis.3. Assessment of Drug utilization pattern in the management of gastroenteritis.Study Design: Prospective Cross-Sectional study was carried out in the General Medicine Department using a well-designed patient data collection form. All gastroenteritis patients prescription detail was collected in a specially designed Case Record Form (CRF) for the evaluation of drug prescribing pattern.Results: Among these 100 patients, male n=57 (57%) and n=43 (43%) were females. The class of drugs prescribed mostly were antibiotics (100%), followed by H2 blockers (75%), and Proton-Pump Inhibitors (25%), Anti-emetics (89%), Intravenous fluids (85%), Prebiotic + Probiotic Combination (84%), Oral rehydration solution (75%), Anti-Spasmodic (60%), Analgesic + Antipyretic (45%), Antacids (15%), NSAIDs (15%) and other miscellaneous drugs for co-morbidities includes-Glimepiride + Metformin (6%), Metformin (3%), Amlodipine (7%), Nebulization-Duolin + Budecort (1%), Cinnarizine (1%).Conclusion: Study result shows that male patients (56%) admitted were more compared to female (44%) and may infer that male are more prone to gastroenteritis compared to female gender. Average age of patients found was between 21-30 years, which indicates that the gastroenteritis and related infections may be chronic in this age group because of the westernization and unhygienic outside food.]]>}</description>

		<title>Protection-of-Cyclophosphamide-Induced-Myelosuppression-by-Extracts-of-Asparagus-setaceous-Kunth-and-Caesalpinia-volkensii-Harm-in-Albino-Rats</title>

		<description>{<![CDATA[Cancer is a leading cause of disease worldwide. In 2012, there were an estimated 14.1 million new cases of cancer in the world. Chemotherapy has been one of the ways to manage cancers. Unfortunately, chemotherapeutic agents used have been observed to have toxic side effects limiting their use. Accordingly, several new strategies are being developed to control and treat cancer. One such approach could be a combination of an effective phytochemical with chemotherapeutic agents, which when combined would enhance efficacy while reducing toxicity to normal tissues. There is a continued interest and need for the identification and development of nontoxic and effective chemopreventive compound that can reduce the side effects of cyclophosphamide.  This study was conducted to establish the protective effects of extracts of Asparagus setaceous Kunth and Caesalpinia volkensii Harm against cyclophosphamide induced myelosuppression in albino rats. In one experimental setup, WBC count was first conducted in all groups of animals. Myelosuppression was then induced by treating animals with single doses of cyclophosphamide and another WBC count done on day 4. The animals were then orally administered with the various extracts and WBC count done on day 9. In another experimental setup, the protective effect of the extracts against cyclophosphamide induced myelosuppression in the experimental rats was assessed. WBC count was first conducted in the groups of animals followed by extract treatments and another WBC count. The animals were then treated with single dose of cyclophosphamide and WBC counts done at various days. The results were analyzed using student t-test. WBC count was found to be significantly reduced following cyclophosphamide treatment. Administration of dichloromethane leave and all ethanolic, methanolic and aqueous extracts were found to reverse leukopenia in albino rats. Hexane extracts did not reverse leukopenia. The extracts were also found to protect the animals against cyclophosphamide induced myelosuppression when animals were first treated with the extracts. These results suggest that the extracts of the two plants are able to reverse myelosuppression induced by cyclophosphamide treatment opening up the possibilities for the use of plant products in the prevention of adverse bone marrow effects associated with cyclophosphamide treatment.]]>}</description>

		<description>{<![CDATA[Spilanthes is a genus of herbs belonging to Asteraceae family commonly known as '' Toothache plant". The inflorescence is used for treating sore throat, stammering and redness of gums and is known to have anti-malarial, anti-diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been reported that they show high antioxidant activity, in the present study, the antioxidant activity was measured in terms of Ferrous Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) for six species of Spilanthes and total phenolic content. Spilanthes ciliata leaves were found to have highest total phenolic content (21.53 mg/g of GAE). Lowest value was recorded in Spilanthes oleracea. Leaves showed more phenols compared to the other parts. Inflorescence showed moderate activity with maximum recorded in S. oleracea. In roots, the total phenolic content was moderate with the maximum recorded in S. ciliata and minimum in S. radicans. In FRAP assay, the maximum activity was observed in S. ciliata followed by S. calva and minimum was observed in S. radicans. Among inflorescence, S. calva and S. oleracea showed higher activity compared to other parts of all other species. Inflorescence of all the other species showed moderate activity. In roots, the antioxidant activity was maximum in S. ciliata and S. uliginosa recorded least activity with maximum reading in S. calva leaves=0.381, minimum in S. uliginosa, root=0.23, among leaves highest frap reading was obtained in S. calva and in roots S. calva and S. oleracea both showed equal FRAP readings and in Inflorescence maximum was in S. calva followed by S. oleracea. This is the first report of comparison of six species of Spilanthes with different plant parts for total phenolic compounds and FRAP assay. ]]>}</description>
